Linnets (Carduelsis cannabina; Tornirisk) are common breeders along the western coast of Norway. This group of juveniles filmed on July 7 at Herdla Nature Preserve were beautifully camouflaged in the sand. The small wings and remnant downy plumage suggest these birds are newly fledged. At 1:32 note the bird in front tracking a bird flying overhead and the soft contact calls of the bird in the b...

Two examples of overt heterospecific aggression in birds at a fall migratory stopover (Palo Alto Baylands). (2) A Long-billed Dowitcher (Limnodromus scolopaceus) rams into a much larger male Blue-winged Teal (Spatula discors). In both cases the aggression is directed against a resting bird and appe...

I was walking home from work today during dusk, and heard a screeching call from high about, It sounded like a crow choking, looked up and saw what I think I can now define, cruising, flying straight down east towards the sunrise, solo, and had the same size and build, just, the voice call I heard is throwing me off, it was a beautiful sight, and the voice was like AC/DC, like nothing I heard before, but recognized it as rare and it was flapping it's wings in awkward ways, there was no breeze in the ground, but in the sky with the sun rising, im sure there was turbulence, it was flying thru... do any other birds compare to this, I am in Maine, pretty sure is wasn't a martin, but when I look up the Merlin's voice, I hear screeching examples, this thing was low and deep, scratchy voice, and single sounds... Thank you for this share... Doing extra research, it might have been a nighthawk, part of the swisher family, love me a good mystery, the way it was flying and calling out, it might have been the nighthawk, I appreciate your shares

Such a sweet little bird...and a lovely song as well. I had seen an uncommon bird at my feeder area lately and I couldn't find an American species like it. Chickadee was a close match, but not exact. It was by an absolute fluke that I saw an article on the titwillow online and I could almost SWEAR that's what I saw here in Illinois, in the central United States. I inquired but always got the negative answer that, no, no titwillows are to be found in the US. I'm still not convinced!

    • @CliveBramham

Never say never! Try to get a photo if the bird returns. A sighting of Willow Tit would be the first for the American Birding Association area. There some crazy unexpected birds on the ABA list, but no Willow Tits so far. Of course, birds very similar to native species tend to go unnoticed. All the best, Clive
